What to compare when buying a scratching post

A shopping guide to stability, height, orientation, and replaceable parts.

A scratching post can look substantial in a product photo and still be difficult to assess. Start your comparison with the dimensions and base, then consider the kind of surface your cat already chooses.

Questions for the product listing

What are the actual post and base measurements? Is assembly required? Are worn scratching sections replaceable, and can replacements be bought separately? Does the maker provide care and stability instructions?

Save the answers before ordering. A lower initial price is less useful if the only part you expect to replace is unavailable.

We are not claiming that any single post will stop unwanted scratching. This checklist helps compare equipment; it does not identify the cause of a change in your cat’s behavior.
